How to Start a Healthy Routine with Energy-Boosting Foods

Giving up alcohol sparks such an amazing feeling that it often inspires other lifestyle changes. You may start to make healthier food choices or work to include more energy-boosting foods in your diet. You may address your day-to-day routine to help you stay focused on your goals and finding ways of achieving them.

Beginning a new routine does take commitment and it can be challenging - but remember that it ultimately leads to a happier and healthier you. When you have a routine, you no longer over-think things and look for ways to avoid them - you just do them.

Here's a simple but health-boosting routine you can try:
- Start each day with a glass of lemon water to rehydrate and refresh your body
- Work out in the morning to kick-start your energy; just 20 minutes a day is all it takes!
- Eat hearty meals that include protein, slow-release carbs, vitamins and minerals
- Sip water throughout the day to stay hydrated; aim for 2 litres per day
- Get 8 hours' sleep; turn off devices and the TV so you can unwind

What foods should I eat to give me more energy?
Most people immediately think of coffee when talking about raising energy levels. It's true that caffeine helps you feel alert and focused, but experts recommend no more than 4 cups per day. Try switching to green tea which offers similar benefits, or stick to water; when you're hydrated, your brain and body can perform to their full potential.

There are lots of delicious, nutritious fuel sources for your body, all loaded with vitamins, minerals, and in some cases, essential fatty acids to keep you going. These include bananas, brown rice, eggs, leafy green vegetables, quinoa, salmon and sweet potatoes.

So get creative in the kitchen and cook up an energy-boosting feast! Your body and mind will enjoy the combined benefits of being alcohol free and nourished with good food.
